Florida Cypress Wood Products Inc. was founded and incorporated in 1988 by William Kavanaugh of Jacksonville.  We manufacturer and distribute everything from rough green (not dry) to finished kiln-dried and dressed (shaped) Cypress lumber.  The process begins when rough-sawn, unseasoned (wet or “green”) lumber arrives by motor freight from sawmills located around the state and throughout the South.  The lumber is graded for quality and stacked according to length with drying sticks placed between each layer of lumber to allow air to pass through the surfaces of the wood.  This “stickering” process is the only way to properly store green lumber.  Without sticks to separate the wood and circulate air, the moisture trapped between unexposed faces will begin to spoil, damage and stain the wood.  When stickering is completed, the resulting uniform "units" of lumber are all the same height and width but varying in length from 6 feet to 16 feet.  The lumber is now ready to be kiln-dried.
Dry lumber is about one-half the weight of unseasoned green lumber.  That's because the water within the growing trees has been removed mechanically in a process known as kiln drying.
Cypress lumber is kiln-dried at Florida Cypress Wood Products at temperatures above 120 degrees for a period of up to three weeks. The lumber units that were earlier "stickered" are carefully layered in rows, one atop anotheruntil the kiln dryer is full. Electric fans force hot, dry air through the lumber by electric dehumidifiers, then recycled back through the lumber to dry again to continually pull moisture out of the wood.  After the moisture content has beenreduced to and equalization point of 12%-15%, the dried rough lumber is highly stabilized from shrinking and warping and is ready to be finished (or dressed) into a variety of patterns.
Our customers include homeowners, contractors, building-supply companies and wholesalers.  One thing all these customers have in common is they know the value of cypress, they like the way it looks, works, shapes and wears.  Most of our orders are for finished wood on custom wood homes. We make more than a dozen patterns of  cypress wood siding and interior wood paneling. Either of these interior or exterior applications include trim pieces and moldings, also of cypress.
One of our more popular products is treated cypress decking.  Treated Cypress decking has none of the unsightly or uncomfortable drawbacks of pressure-treated pine decking. It stays where you nail it, and it will remain smooth to the barefoot after decades of wear.  This decking is available in Random Lengths of 6' through 16', widths of 4" and 6" (nominal), and thickness of 5/4" (1" net) and 6/4" (1 1/4" net).  You also have two choices of patterned profiles, the radius edge (or eased edge, that features smooth, slightly rounded edges) for outdoor sun decks, and the Tongue and Groove (T&G) Center Match for covered porches and verandas.
Traditional products in Cypress include interior T&G V-Joint paneling in 4/4 (3/4" net) thickness in all grades, widths and lengths.  Cypress wood moldings are made to your specification for trim at Base, Case and Ceiling crown mold.  Many patterns are available, some more popular ones are featured within this web site (Standard Patterns, Other Patterns).
Wood timbers in Cypress have become a regular request in recent years.  We will saw and dress these timbers in dimensions from 4x4 to 8x12 up to 24 feet in length.
Our primary focus at Florida Cypress Wood Products is the handsome appearance of  traditional wood architecture found in either new or historic fine homes.  We believe that any rich looking wood home interior would be incomplete without Cypress , and this woodwork is the first feature that defines our company's product line.
Despite our enthusiasm for Cypress wood's qualities, many people prefer heart Pine and other high-grade pine finishes in their flooring and cabinetry.  In fact, the traditional and/or historic homes you visit will invariably include both Cypress and Pine in complementary uses.  We therefore offer Heart Pine and other high grade pine lumber for use along side your cypress woodwork.  So give us a call and let us help you fill your interior and exterior fine wood requirements.
